Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Longshot Derf's Secret Alt

Samuel Adams Longshot Derf's Secret Alt

Big malty flavors front and center: caramel, bread, butter, toast; backed with traces of peat, smoke, spice. Strong fruity presence mainly dried/candied. Very bread-pudding-ish. Dim hints of earthy-grassy floral bitterness, way off in the distance. Sweet this beer begins, and sweet it remains.

Thick and smooth, decently-carbonated, distinctly sticky. Softly drying, definitely warming (with very noticeable boozy prickls). A beer you can sink your teeth into—massively chewy.

A big altbier-ish thing, past the realm of the sticke to the land of the doppelsticke; a beer style I've seen compared to barleywines (and it has strong similarities to some good English versions). Not a beer style I know all that well (only had one other) but this was very pleasant and quite drinkable, obvious boozy potency notwithstanding. Intense and complex and definitely a malt-bomb. Tasty!
