Southern Tier Porter

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Porter

Southern Tier Porter

Lots of chocolate and caramel (the chocolate is more like good milk chocolate than anything else), plenty of dark bread, some toast. Earthy-grassy bitterness throwing in, some, with the dark and roasty. Dark fruits and hints of spices; a flash of tang/stale/slightly sour; traces of peat and smoke around the edges. Dries out neatly by the finish.

Medium-bodied, maybe a little thicker, slightly chewy, with decent carbonation. Roasty-drying, tending to refreshing. Pretty smooth, with maybe a trace of syrupy stickiness. There might be something a little mineral-hard in the transition to the aftertaste.

Unsurprisingly, a really superb porter, considering how well Southern Tier's beers typically work for me. Intense, complex, balanced, integrated, yada yada. Drinkable as hell, and astonishingly tasty.
