Tonight's beer: Stone 16th Anniversary IPA
Starts off with a white-noisy blast of bitterness. After a moment, character starts to emerge: Lots of mostly-lemony citrus, strong impressions of pine, flowers, and grass. Pale bread and traces of toast definitely a background element. A fim flicker of something like herbs and/or spice. Maybe a little pure alcohol, like vodka or something. Bitter, then very dry.
Medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Some bready/resinous stickiness. Something almost flinty on the finish, and some definite alcohol heat. Very, *very* drying.
A very big and massively bitter Double IPA, with lots of citrusy bitterness (and yes the lemon oil is a cheat, sort of). Not even on the same planet as balanced, but surprisingly complex, and nicely-integrated. Definitely an in-character statement beer from Stone, suitable to mark their anniversary.
