Tonight's beer: Widmer Brothers Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout
Tart raspberries up front and on top. Dark bread and chocolate following up. Earth, grass, caramel, smoke, and peat all woven into a background tapestry. More tart and roasty than sweet; finishes very dry, with a bristly-vaguely-mineral flicker.
Bready and chewy, but not particularly thick or viscous. Decently carbonated, with not a lot of warning of the 9.3% ABV. A hint of gentle pucker, then a long and roasty-dry finish.
A very nice roasty big stout, with a big heaping helping of raspberries thrown in. All the roasts (mostly chocolatey as they are) play with the raspberries to make good happy. Balanced and intense; integrated and complex. Very drinkable. Turned out to make for a yummy dessert after a big and intense dinner.
