This afternoon's beer: DuClaw 31
Tons of caramel-bready-toasty sweetness, moderated and modulated by baking spices—mainly allspice, cloves, nutmeg. Dried/candied fruits emerge through middle, with a banana character that's odd, for a lager. A spark of earthy-floral-grassy bitterness flickers at the finish, as the beer struggles to dry out (and mostly doesn't).
Medium-bodied, a bit chewy and sticky, with decent carbonation. A fair amount of syrupy finish. Gently drying, teetering on the brink of being refreshing—on the border of cloying.
An interesting choice for a fall seasonal beer, in a field dominated by pumpkin beers and Oktoberfest/Märzen lagers. Has tendencies toward dunkelweizen characters, with flavors more typical for weizen yeast strains. Not a bad beer, necessarily, but I'm not sure what DuClaw were aiming at, so I'm not sure if they hit it. Moderately drinkable, all in all.
