This evening's beer: Dry Dock Vanilla Porter
The vanilla that all but dominates the aroma recedes quite a bit; dark bread, chocolate, coffee, and toffee step forward unto the breach. Caramel and toast fill in some gaps, standing beside the vanilla right behind. Hints of earth and peat blend with the roasty bitterness to balance the substantial sweetness. Pretty sweet from start to finish, but not cloyingly so.
Pretty medium-bodied, with what feels like decent carbonation. A bit of bready-chewiness and some syrupy-stickiness. Pretty substantial; eventually roasty-drying and surprisingly close to refreshing and almost-clean.
A very nice porter, less dominated by the vanilla than one might guess by smelling it. Very well-balanced and integrated; complex and intense as hell—especially at 5.4% ABV. Impressively flavorful for a beer of such moderate strength. Massively yummy.
