Tonight's beer: New Belgium Lips of Faith La Folie (2012)

New Belgium Lips of Faith La Folie (2012)

Bright vinous impressions to open, with strong overlays of tart cherries and red wine vinegar. Something definitely wooden in the middle, with an unsurprising hint of vanilla. Maybe a trace of caramel in there somewhere somewhere. Tart, then a little sweet, then tart, then dry.

Medium-light-bodied, with some decent carbonation. Juicy-tart and bracingly puckering. Tending a little bit toward refreshing. Something almost mineral toward the back end, maybe.

Seems like a pretty spot-on Flemish Brown Ale to me. Tart, but not overpoweringly vinegary. Not a style that lends itself (at least on my palate) to complexity or subtlety, really—sour and tart from start to finish—but clearly nothing mistaken about it. Probably a beer I'd want to serve with the right food.
