Tonight's beer: Dogfish Head Punkin
Pumpkins and bread and toast; caramel and molasses and brown sugar; big heaps of baking spices—cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and cloves. Background impressions of bourbon, rum, and vanilla. Something buttery lingering around the perimeter (but may be how my palate parses heavily caramelized malts; this doesn't seem like something untoward to me). Pretty sweet froms tart to finish, on a slight drying trend.
Maybe on the heavy and viscous side of medium-bodied—syrupy stickiness is the foremost tactile impression—with some soft carbonation. Notable dark alcohol presence. Drying, more refreshing than warming; finishes surprisingly clean.
One of the first pumpkin beers I tried (might have been the first), back when I was just starting on the bath to beer-geekery. It's been a while since I've had it; that's kinda a mistake. Inense and complex and integrated; reminiscent of a good pumpkin pie. Smells and tastes like autumn. Definitely worth the 4-pack. Very yummy.
