Tonight's beer: Duvel Moortgat Duvel
Bitter up front—grassy and floral—backed by pale bread with a trace of toast. Vague hints of candied/dried apples and pears (which come forward a bit as the beer warms). Bitter, then astonishingly dry. A trace of something spicy off in the distance.
Pretty light-bodied, with a lot of carbonation. Roughly zero alcohol heat—kinda frightening that way, for 8.5% ABV. Drying and startlingly refreshing. Maybe a trace of bready stickiness on the finish.
I feel as though I should have some sort of shrine to this beer, somewhere. Deceptive enough to almost qualify as evil; stupidly drinkable, to the point of slurpable. Probably one of the first great beers I had, way ikn the distant early days of my beer-geekery. Balanced, intense, complex, integrated; delicious from start to finish.
