Tonight's beer: Unibroue Grande Reserve 17
Dark bread, caramel, smoke, vanilla, baking spices. Dark dried/candied fruits lurking through the middle, opposed and almost-balanced by grassy-earthy-floral bitterness. Oaken hints with dim traces of brandy and/or rum. Kinda sweet at start, then dries out nicely.
Pretty light-bodied, with what feels like decent carbonation, and a trace of boozy heat. Some bready-syrupy stickiness on the finish—drying, refreshing, mostly clean. Pretty smooth.
An amazingly drunkable beer: intense, and stunningly complex; marvelously balanced and well-integrated. What a wonderful way to have celebrated an anniversary; a superb statement beer; still roughly dominated by Unibroue's house yeast character. Yummy.
