Tonight's beer: Alewerks Pumpkin Ale
Caramel, toast, lots of pumpkin, scats of baking spices—cinnamon, allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg. Strong impressions of molasses and maple syrup through the middle. Dim hints of butter and earthy-grassy bitterness in the background. Spice and bitterness linger into finish, as the beer struggles (and kinda succeeds, a little bit) to dry out some.
Kinda syrupy-thick, viscous, very gently carbonated. A gentle trace of boozy warmth on the back end. Gently drying, very satisfying, plenty refreshing. Bready-chewy all the way through.
A beautiful beer in the glass that tastes better than it looks. Intense and complex; marvelously well-integrated. Basically, it's a liquid pumpkin pie, with a kick. Drinkable for days. I gather this is sometimes a hard beer to find; I'm glad they had this at the brewery when we were there. Utterly enjoyable.
