Tonight's beer: Cape Ann Fisherman's Imperial Pumpkin Stout (2011)
Caramel, molasses, dark bread and toast; chocolate and coffee rolling through right behind. Pumpkins kinda back a bit, with a good handful of spices—allspice, cloves, cinnamon; maybe some ginger or cardamom or nutmeg—thrown in. Ash, earth, grass dimly in the background, with a soft kiss of whiskey and/or rum.
Thick, viscous, syrupy-sticky. Surprisingly smooth; decently carbonated. A soft warmth that's completely inadequate warning of the 11% ABV that lurks within. Filling and satisfying.
A stunningly drinkable, very big beer. Clearly, it wasn't hurt at all by the extra time it spent in the bottle. Intense and complex and integrated and balanced; marvelous for sipping, and rewards close and careful attention. Something I'll buy every year I find it, and I'll let some sit if I can. A delightful and delicious way to wrap up Thanksgiving.
