Tonight's beer: Hitachino Nest Commemorative Ale 2010
Pale citrussy fruit—oranges, maybe grapefruit—on bready-toasty-caramel. Hints of something like vanilla, and maybe other spicy notes, possibly some herbs. Grassy-earthy bitterness emerges on finish. Kinda juicy-sweet, then dry and tending to bitter. Might be a trace of spirits on the aftertaste.
Quite light-bodied, massively carbonated. Drying and very refreshing. Cleansing, almost scrubbing. Practically zero alcohol presence, given the 8% ABV.
Wow. An astonishingly complex beer, intense and balanced and integrated. Possibly not even the gawds know what all ended up in this beer, and it's probably changed some over the time it's been in the bottle. Surprisingly drinkabler. An idiosyncratic but completely excellent beer.
