Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf
Cherries up front—mostly dry, a little tart. Spicy-earthy-grassy bitterness right behind. Some honey-bready-caramel sweetness emerges through the middle. Dries out again into the short and quick finish, with a vaguely-medicinal spiritous flicker.
Very light-bodied, with a lot of prickle that's probably about evenly split between carbonation and booze. Other than that, the 11% ABV is distressingly well-hidden—there's no real heat to speak of. Gently drying on the finish, pretty clean, and very refreshing.
This is one of those beers I always seem to drink too quickly, even though I know better from experience with this same beer. Tons of flavor, here—intense and complex; there's a lot of stuff, and it's all integrated nicely. Drinkable to the point of slurping, with a sizable alcohol content carried subtly and gracefully. Delicious, and one of my must-buy beers this time of year.
