First beer of 2013: Avec les Bons Voeux de la Brasserie Dupont
Grassy-earthy-floral bitterness on top, with hay, mold, animal, assorted other barn/farm impressions. Bread and pale fruit and spice in the background; flickers of sweet, then dry and drier. Explosively flavorful, with lots of threads to pull on and get lost following.
Very light-bodied, highly-carbonated. Drying like a quick jaunt through Death Valley; refreshing like an onshore breeze on the beach. The beer has as little alcohol presence as any other beer I've had this strong (9.5% ABV).
Wow. One of my favorite beers, period. Wildly intense, staggeringly complex; beautifully balanced and well-integrated. Frighteningly drinkable, with absolutely zero warning of the sizable boozy payload. The beer serves as a more-than-suitable replacement for Champagne, come midnight on January 1; better, for my money. Amazing, and awesome; pure distilled yum.
Happy New Year, everyone!
