Tonight's beer: Alaskan Perseverance
Chocolate and a bit of coffee, backed by complex and subtle sweetness—bread, toast, honey, caramel, syrup (the bottle says birch syrup, and ... OK). Traces of wood in the background (maybe that birch again), and hints of earth and grass around the finish. Roasty, then a bit sweet, then dries out substantially.
Thick, bready, silky-smooth; gently-carbonated. Some syrupy stickiness on the back end. Roughly zero alcohol heat, or warmth, or prickle. Softly drying through and after the finish; filling and satisfying.
Wow. I don't get a lot of Alaskan's beers (a downside of living in the mid-Atlantic, in a state backward enough to ban shipping alcohol in), but they really pulled out all the stops for their 25th anniversary. Intense, complex, and beautifully well-integrated. Smooth as hell and amazingly graceful. No warning—none at all—of the 9% ABV. A beautiful beer, really. It spent a beer in the bottle, and did quite well.
