Anchor Our Special Ale 2012

Tonight's beer: Anchor Our Special Ale 2012

Anchor Our Special Ale 2012

Dark bread, chocolate; juniper leads a complex battalion of spices, backed by allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg. Elements of grassy-floral-earthy bitterness; some pine that might be from hops as well as juniper. Maybe a flicker of smoke in the background. Caramel and molasses dimly present throughout.

Medium-bodied, gently-carbonated. A bit of syrupy stickiness, especially on the back end, and some bready chewiness. Softly drying. Tends toward refreshing.

Yum. Even though the spices seem as though they've faded—and if there was citrus, I think it's just about gone—this is still a brilliantly festive beer. One of my landmarks for the winter holidays. Intense and complex and beautifully integrated; delicious from start to finish and very drinkable.
