Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2010)

Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2010)

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2010)

Dark unsweetened chocolate up front; dark bread, toast, caramel woven in. Coffee rising through the middle, backed by earthy-grassy bitterness. Ash, smoke, peat in the background. Dries out a ton by the finish.

Thick and chewy, dense and viscous. Toasty-drying from start to finish. Traces of bready-syrupy stickiness. Long finish. Practically zero alcohol presence. Decently-carbonated. Filling and immensely satisfying.

Wow. This is why I let bottles of this sit around. Intense and complex, still, but whatever rough edges the beer might have (not many, I'll grant) are mellowed substantially. Amazingly drinkable, with roughly no warning of the substantial booze payload. This was the first big stout I had (lo, these many years ago), and it obviously has a special place in my heart, and in my belly. Delicious from start to finish.
