Tonight's beer: Magic Hat Heart of Darkness
Dark roasty bitterness up front—coffee and baking chocolate—with dark bread, toast, touches of caramel and burnt fruits a step or two back. Dim earthy-grassy impressions, and vague possibilities of spice. Roasty, then a little sweet, then dries out a lot.
A little on the thick side of medium-bodied, decently carbonated. Plenty roasty-drying. A bit bready-chewy, and notably sticky on the finish.
A very drinkable stout. Magic Hat used to brew this year-round, I think; I can see why so many people were upset when they stopped. Plenty of roasty intensity here, but pretty balanced; complex and nicely integrated. Very nice as a new winter seasonal, though I suspect I will miss Howl. Yummy.
