Tonight's beer: Magic Hat (Humdinger Series) Burnpile
Caramel-smokey sweetness to open, with dark bread, chocolate, and a trace of coffee woven in. Earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness more of a background player. Burnt fruits and possibilities of dark baking spices flicker around the perimeter. Sweet, then roasty-bitter, then a flash of sweet, then dries out a bit.
Medium-bodied, gently-carbonated. A bit of chewiness and some stickiness around the finish.. Gently drying, tending toward refreshing. Nicely smooth, with just the barest touch of warmth.
Quite a pleasant smoky porter, big enough to be warming in the belly on a brisk early-winter evening. Intense and complex, nicely integrated. Plenty smokey, but not dominated by it. Surprisingly drinkable, and very tasty.
