Sierra Nevada Narwhal

Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Narwhal

Sierra Nevada Narwhal

Dark roasts up-front: dark unsweetened chocolate, strong black coffee. Toasty dark bread right behind, with strong impressions of ash, burnt fruits, earth. Flashes of grass and flowers, maybe a touch of dark spirits (rum, brandy, whiskey) and caramel around the perimeter.

Medium-bodied, well-carbonated, a bit soft and chewy. Roasty-dry from start to finish; scrubbing. Long slightly-sticky finish. Not a lot of alcohol presence—just a trace of boozy warmth. A bit of slipperiness through the middle.

A very nice imperial stout, laden with roast character. Searingly intense, amazingly complex; balanced (for a big stout) and nicely integrated. A big sipping beer, probably a bit too intense to be really drinkable. It'll be interesting to see what more time in the bottle does for this beer.
