Southern Tier Pumking

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Pumking

Southern Tier Pumking

Deeply-caramelized pumpkins—buttery-rich (not the off-flavor)—with brown sugar, molasses, molasses, and deeply-toasted bread. Earthy-grassy bitterness lurks in the background, with strong impressions of dark baking spices: nothing lighter than cinnamon and nutmeg; allspice and cloves threaded in. Dim hints of dark spirits—rum, whiskey, brandy.

Smooth, creamy, softly chewy; decently carbonated. Syrupy stickiness starts just about at the beginning and never stops, really. Just the slightest touch of boozy warmth more of an afterglow. A little drying on the finish; filling and satisfying.

A wonderful pumpkin beer, more about caramel and other dark sugars than spices—I'm inclined to call that a pleasant change of pace. Probbaly my favorite pumpkin beer: intense, complex, marvelously well-integrated. Delicious, and perfect as a dessert, all on its own.
