Tonight's beer: Victory Yakima Glory
Grassy-floral-piney bitterness front and center, with background citrus and spice impressions. Dark toast and caramel solidly balancing things. Traces of roasts—coffee and chocolate—off in the distance, with some dried/candied/burnt fruits around the edges. A wall of bitter to start, then a touch of sweet emerges briefly, then the beer does an impression of the Gobi.
Dry, from start to finish. Drying, scrubbing, refreshing. Some resinous stickiness toward and through the finish, with a touch of bready chewiness. Slightly thicker than medium-bodied, with pretty good carbonation. Just the vaguest kiss of boozy prickle.
An amazingly drinkable beer, not as much like a barleywine as I remember from a couple years ago (not that I'm complaining). Very hops-focused, but lots of malt to balance things; intense and complex and well-integrated. Very little warning of the 8.7% ABV.
