Tonight's beer: Anchor Our Special Ale (2012)
Dark and toasty—skating along the edge of roasty. Dark bread and toast and caramel in a tug of war with chocolate and soft coffee. Spices hover around and between the toast and the roast, mostly juniper, cardamom, and ginger; maybe a dash of nutmeg, allspice, cloves. Earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness appears mostly toward the finish.
A little bready-chewy and thick, with decent lively carbonation. Gently drying, quite refreshing. A bit of stickiness on the finish, but pretty clean and cleansing; nicely satisfying.
Such a beautifully festive beer, the winter holidays in a bottle. Intense and complex, tightly woven into a unified and cohesive whole. One of the beers I'm miss in the post-holiday months; I'm already looking forward to the 2013 recipe. Delicious.
