Tonight's beer: DuClaw X-1
Lots of chocolate, with healthy dollops of vanilla and buttery caramel on top; chocolate and bourbon, all right. Coffee, dark bread, toast way back, with dim possibilities of burnt fruits and maybe a touch of something ashy.
Awfully hot for a beer that's "only" (a relative term) 8% ABV. Syrupy-sticky but more thin than thick. Lots of roasty-boozy drying going on. Filling and satisfying, with lots of glow in the belly.
A typically unsubtle DuClaw beer: Chocolate and bourbon, with background elements of porter character. Sippable enough, pleasant to work through of an evening. Seems as though it should be stronger than it is. Balance and integration are thing that other beers do; the flavor is intense, but rather simple. Another in a line of DuClaw beers that seem as tough they should have been awesome, but weren't.
