Tonight's beer: Great Divide Hibernation Ale
Deeply toasted darkish bread, rich with caramel and buttered around the edges. Earthy-grassy bitterness mustering itself to keep the beer from face-planting on the sweet side. Dark dried/candied fruits and a touch of dark baking spice flickering around the perimeter. Maybe a little dark spirits in there, somewhere.
Bready and chewy, thick and gently carbonated. Softly drying, a little warming. A dim shadow of stickiness on the finish. Remarkably little boozy heat. Filling and satisfying.
A very nice Old Ale from a brewery I've come to like and respect—Great Divide. Balanced and integrated, intense and complex; subtle enough to reward careful and close attention. Sneaky enough to make for trouble if not treated with adequate respect. Yummy.
