Tonight's beer: Mahr's Mastodon
Bready-crackery, lightly-toasted malts the first thing I notice, with undertones of vanilla and smoke. Grassy-floral bitterness back a bit, but the flavor is more balanced than that description might make it seem: The beer is never cloying, and it dries out plenty by the finish.
Kinda round and thick and smooth for a 5.2% ABV lager—my first thought was that it felt like a doppelbock or something. Decently carbonated, and pretty clean; maybe even some cleansing. A bit of chewiness and stickiness, but nothing bad or major.
I do not know how many other Kellerbiers I've had (I have a mental note going, "bing," with the message that the style doesn't get imported much into the U.S.) but this is very nice, and very drinkale. Kinda simple, but intense, integrated and marvelously balanced (and there are some subtle things hanging around the edges). I would have like this beer a lot, even without the tie-in to the band that re-awakened my long-dormant love of metal. \m/ Cheers!
