Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Samuel Adams Winter Lager

Bright spice and citrus and a bit of earthy-grassy bitterness flash past, then a bready-toasty caramelly wave slams through. Toward the end, the spice and citrus and bitterness re-emerge as the beer dries out a little; it stays tilted to the sweet, though.

Kinda bready-chewy, but solidly medium-bodied. Very well-carbonated. A trace of stickiness, into and through the finish. Gently filling, softly drying, a bit refreshing.

A nice beer. Gently spiced, but not dominated by it. Plenty drinkable, with a bit of substance and a bit of grace. The wheat in the grain bill lightens and softens it some, so it's not as massive seeming as some bocks (to say nothing of doppelbocks). There's a good amount of flavor, here: complex, decently balanced, nicely well-integrated. A solid inclusion in the Winter Classics 12-pack.
