Tröegs Mad Elf

Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf

Tröegs Mad Elf

Darkish bread, toast, caramel, maybe some honey in with all the sweet; dark dried/candied fruits (mainly cherries but including grapes, plums, and others), bananas and dark baking spices. Earthy-grassy-floral bitterness emerges toward the finish as the beer struggles to dry out. Dim flickers of brandy and rum.

Light-bodied, with good carbonation. Pleasantly drying and remarkably refreshing, with roughly zero warning of the 11% ABV. A little stickiness on the end, but otherwise pretty clean.

A delicious beer, with plenty of cherry character (and a bit of honey character), nicely integrated with some other at least vaguely Belgian flavors. Probably too heavy on the fruit to qualify as "balanced," but plenty complex and intense; massively drinkable. I'm going to miss this beer until next winter (or at least autumn.
