Blue Point Old Howling Bastard

Tonight's beer: Blue Point Old Howling Bastard

Blue Point Old Howling Bastard

Deeply-toasted bread—caramelized to the point of almost-buttery—butting heads with grassy-floral bitterness richly threaded with pine and possibilities of citrus. Background hints of toffee/nuts, dried/candied fruits (mainly things like figs and prunes), and vanilla. Strong impressions of spirits, especially whiskey, mainly around the finish.

Bready-thick sticky, chewy, very softly carbonated. Some boozy prickle and warmth, a bit drying. Filling and satisfying, and warming in the belly.

A very nice Barleywine, indeed, probably tending more toward an American interpretation—it's plenty hoppy, but not all that piney or citrussy. Pretty rell balanced, plenty complex and intense, decently integrated. Drinkable, for a big and obviously boozy beer, more like a sipping beer for a chilly evening than anything else.
