Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2011)

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2011)

A big wallop of dark chocolate (like 100% cacao) backed by deeply earthy coffee, some bread, and a dollop of caramel. Earth, grass, ash, peat, vanilla and maybe something in the lines of bourbon filling in the interstices.

Big and smooth and palpably rich; roasty-drying from start to finish. A dim fliker of boozy heat, but nothing like what I'd expect, given the 10% ABV. Oily viscous and syrupy sticky; decently carbonated, though. Filling and satisfying and finally warming.

Egad! This was one of the first truly excellent beers I had, lo these many many moons ago, and it still occupies a soft warm spot in my heart. Drinkable as hell, without much hint how much alcohol it's packing. Intense and complex, balanced and integrated. Delicious from start to finish. It's aging nicely.
