Tonight's beer: Brouwerij The Musketeers Troubadour Obscura
Chocolate, caramel, toffee explode to start. Dried and candied dark fruits—cherries, raisins, plums, figs, etc.—right behind, with threads of leather, smoke, grass, spice. Toast and dark bread solidly in the background, with distinct rummy impressions. Sweet at the start; dries out gradually but pretty thoroughly by the end.
Medium-bodied, smooth bordering on creamy, with decent carbonation. Some bready chewiness, some syrupy stickiness. Really, practically zero warning of the 8.5% ABV. Overall, skirts a line between filling and refreshing.
A very drinkable biggish beer, subtle to the point of evil about its alcohol content. Smooth, delicious, rich; pretty intense and complex. The malt character reminds me more of some doppelbocks I've had than most (non-Belgian) stouts. An excellent beer, indeed.
