Tonight's beer: Brouwerij Van Steenberge Gulden Draak
Dark bread, caramel, toast, flickers of chocolate; threaded with dried and candied fruits like cherries, plums, raisins; dark baking spices—mostly allspice and cloves, with hints of ginger—flashing past. Earthy-grassy bitterness through the middle and into the end. Peat, leather, ash around the edges. Tends toward sweet at the start; dries out gradually but thoroughly.
Very light-bodied, and highly-carbonated. Some stickiness around the finish but mostly clean, cleansing, scrubbing, refreshing. The vaguest hint of boozy heat—nothing like what I'd expect from a 10.5% ABV beer. Gently drying.
An amazing beer, really. Intense, complex, balanced, integrated; massively drinkable. Absolutely zero warning of the imposing alcohol content. There's a lot to this beer, and it never puts a foot wrong. I really wish I could afford to drink like this all the time.
