Tonight's beer: Grand Teton 5 O'clock Shadow
Nutty toffee, chocolate, threads of coffee, backed by dark toast. Earthy-grassy-floral bitterness back some. Maybe a hint of something caramel or fruity: definitely some sweetness of some sort. Nicely dry from start to finish.
Thick and chewy, well-carbonated, with some syrupy stickiness. Roasty-drying, with a dim flicker of boozy heat. Filling and satisfying, with strong aspirations to refreshing.
Yum. I loves a goof Schwarzbier, and this is a very tasty one—even if at 7.4% ABV it's a bit big and boozy for the style. Plenty complex and intense; integrated, balanced. Really compares well and accurately to good porters and stouts, but a bit cleaner (lager yeasts will do that). I've never had a bad beer from Grand Teton, and this is an excellent one. I really wish this brewery was easier for me to get.
