Tonight's beer: The Lost Abbey Judgment Day
Lots of dark bread, lightly toasted; dollops of caramel, touches of toffee, nuts, chocolate. Dark dried/candied fruits through the middle: Raisins are on the label, but also dark cherries and plums. Leather, earth, ash, peat, smoke; a complexly-threaded background, with flickers of grass and flowers in the interstices.
Medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. A bit drying, more sticky and chewy. Really not any hint of 10.5% ABV. Gently cleansing—surprisingly, almost-scrubbing—on the finish.
Wow. A pretty astonishing beer, really; laden with intense and complex flavors, all beautifully integrated. The bottle says this was bottled in May of 2012; it's clearly at least survived well (and possibly improved, or altered pleasingly). Delicious from start to finish, and amazingly drinkable.
