Tonight's beer: Red Brick Brick Mason Series Wee Heavy
Smoke and peat, backed by caramel, toffee, and dark toast. Dark dried/candied fruits—raisins, plums, figs, etc.—appear through the middle. Earthy-grassy bitterness appears around and after the finish, as the beer dries out some.
On the thick side of medium-bodied, with decent carbonation. Smoky-drying; more filling and satisfying than cleansing and refreshing. Maybe a trace of alcohol tingle, off in the distance.
Very nice. Maybe a bit smoky if one wants to be persnickety about style, but that's basically a quibble—it's well contained and nicely integrated. The balance tilts (appropriately) to the malts, but the flavor is intense and complex; anyway, it's not as though ti's sickly-sweet or cloying. I have a fondness for the style, and this is a delicious take on it.
