Tonight's beer: Wild Heaven Invocation
Starts with a wallop of musky floral bitterness, threaded with grass, pale dried/candied fruits (pears, apples, golden raisins, melons, pineapples, tropical fruits) and gently-toasted pale bread. Never really gets sweet, but finishes with a beautiful tension between some impressive dryness and a smattering of juicy hints.
Medium-bodied, well-carbonated. Quenching, massively refreshing; cleansing and scrubbing. A trace of stickiness into the finish. Approximately zero alcohol heat. Dim juicy traces around the perimeter.
Huh. I didn't exactly have anything like expectations for this beer, but it surprised me. It's a very excellent beer. Complex and intense, nicely balanced and integrated; nothing like a clone of Duvel, but clearly inspired by it. Probably reminds me almost as much as some Belgian-style IPAs I've had, like De Ranke XX, Piraat, Raging Bitch, and Little Sumpin' Wild; that's a favorable comparison, by the way—this beer belongs in that company. Color me *very* impressed. Delicious.
