Tongiht's beer: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (2013)
Piney-floral-grassy bitterness barely on top of bready, toasty, caramelized-to-the-point-of-almost-buttery malty sweet-ish-nesse. Background flickering impressions of baking spices, dim possibilities of dried/candied fruits.
Bready—thick and chewy—with scattered carbonation. Softly drying, with a gentle kiss of boozy warmth. Soft-ish, almost pillowy, and almost entirely smooth.
Pretty much the definitive American Barleywine, as far as making the style. Big and burly; less citrussy than I remember from when I've had this fresh before, and less like a Double IPA than I remember, too (though I never saw the stylistic confusion there some others did). Intense and complex, of course, and nicely-integrated; slightly unbalanced toward the bitter side. Nicely drinkable for such a big beer, and surprisingly subtle. Delicious, and substantial enough to age for at least a couple years.
