Tonight's beer: 21st Amendment Lower De Boom
Citrussy-piny bitterness braced against toasty-caramel sweetness. Grassy-floral threads more in the background, with touches of toffee, nuts, butter. A bracing almost-tannic character hangs over the whole thing. Dried fruits and spice flash past, on a veil of something a lot like whiskey.
Bready and chewy, but more soft than syrupy; decently carbonated. Boldly boozy—lots of prickle and heat—but entirely contained and pleasant and appropriate for 11.5% ABV. Softly drying on the long-ish finish.
Probably as wine-like a barleywine as I've had in a long time (mostly because it's so tannic); sippable enough that the 8.4-oz. can seems like a good choice. Massively intense and complex; nicely integrated; surprisingly well-balanced. I suspect it'll age nicely—we'll have to acquire more—but plenty delicious now.
