Tonight's beer: Allagash Fluxus (2012)
Bright and fruity to start, but very much mostly dry—apples and pears and white grapes, some pale stonefruit (like peaches maybe) in the interstices. Some peppery prickle and spice, warming into and through the finish. Floral-grassy bitterness more in the background. Never really sweet, but finishes extremely dry.
Very light-bodied, highly-carbonated. Massively drying and astonishingly refreshing. A little warmth on the palate—I'd be inclined to suspect eh peppercorns, but boozy burn is also possible. As light-bodied as the beer is, it's not particularly soft. Surprisingly quenching.
I'm shocked—shocked, I tell you—that Allagash brewed a gloriously drinkable and delicious beer. Surprisingly true-to-style (Belgian Strong Pale Ale) for a beer with such oddball ingredients (spelt, red and pink peppercorns). Intense and complex and all superbly well-integrated. An awesome beer, on pretty much every level I can find.
