Tonight's beer: Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye
Bitter to start—orange and grapefruit and pine, flowers and grass; tart and peppery rye character, maybe a flicker of spice. Bready-toasty caramel sweetness wafting past. Long and drying finish, soft dim whiskey-ish flickers.
Bready-chewy, a bit thick, well-carbonated. Some resinous-syrupy stickiness on the finish, drying, tending toward refreshing. Practically zero boozy heat, considering the 8% ABV.
A very drinkable Rye IPA—probably the first I had, many many moons ago when I was still figuring out the whole beer-nerd thing. Delicious—flavorful and intense and complex, with the rye nicely integrated with the biggish IPA; more balanced than, say, the Palate Wrecker—but that's a vastly different beer. Quite excellent.
