Big Sky Kriek (2010)

Tonight's beer: Big Sky Kriek (2010)

Big Sky Kriek (2010)

Bright tart cherries front and center, with sparse Bing cherry threads woven in. Vanilla and dark spices like allspice and cloves in the middle with some molasses, toast, caramel, brandy, and rum. Never particularly sweet, but goes pretty much directly from tart to dry.

Medium-bodied, but distinctly syrupy-sticky, with sparse carbonation. Pretty substantial boozy heat, but not unpleasant at all; all that alcohol makes for a drying beer, eventually. Struggles in the direction of refreshing.

This is an awfully big beer, and pretty obviously so; it's not something to plow through—not a bad things at 10% ABV—but it's beautifully sippable and surprisingly delicious. Obviously dominated by cherries, but some murk and mystery thrown in. Complex and intense and holds together nicely. I don't miss having my wife live two-thirds of the continent away, but I *do* miss Big Sky and their beers. Very, very nice.
