Tonight's beer: Smuttynose Wheat Wine
Deeply-toasted bread (hitting the good butter button on my palate) braided with bright pale fruits; caramel and juice. Earthy-grassy-floral bitterness builds through the middle, carrying into the long and dry finish. Some impressions of clear liquor off in the distance.
Soft and thick, tending toward heavy, with some prickle that's part booze and part carbonation. Not exactly burn, but definite alcohol presence. Drying on the finish, gently warming in the belly.
A superb beer in a kinda rare style I adore, by a brewer I respect like hell (Smuttynose almost always gets it right, IMO). Lots of big flavors, a complex tapestry beautifully woven. Stunningly drinkable, for a beer that's probably somewhere over 10% ABV. Not one of the wheatwines that's like a hefeweizen on steroids. More like a softer (but not moffled or muted) barleywine. A delicious beer from start to finish, on all levels.
