Tonight's beer: Stift Engelszell Gregorius
Dark fruits—figs, cherries, plums, grapes—dried and candied, backed by toasted dark bread, molasses, caramel. Dark baking spices like allspice, cloves, cinnamon floating past. Chocolate, leather, tobacco, smoke on the perimeter; rum and brandy through the finish. Gently sweet, then gradually dry.
Smooth, pillowy-soft, amply caronated. A little chewy, but in the main pretty clean. Long, drying, cleansing finish. Practically zero alcohol presence overall; on the light side of medium-bodied.
Wow. This is one beautiful beer, massively drinkable. Intense and complex for days; marvelously balanced and well-integrated (though there's not a lot of honey character, and it's specifically brewed with honey). Delicious, from start to finish. Not exactly like any of the other Trappist beers, but more than worthy of inclusion in that fraternity. Worth finding (and probably not all that hard to find, really).
