Tonight's beer: Unibroue Trader Joe's Vintage Ale (2102)
Lots of cardamom, with hints of other baking spices. Some dark bread, caramel, and chocolate back a bit; flickers of dark fruits like cherries, plums, raisins. A little earthy-grassy bitterness on the finish, as the beer dries out a little.
Very light-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Quite drying into and after the finish, and surprisingly refreshing. Nowhere near the noticeable booze I'd expect in a 9% ABV beer. A little bready-syrupy stickiness.
This beer would be astonishingly drinkable if I liked cardamom more; I like the spice fine, but there seems to be to be an awful lot of it. Plenty intense, but all the cardamom kinda overwhelms everything else (and there's a lot of everything else, if you can get past the cardamom). That's at least a mild bummer, because I usually like Unibroue's beers tons. Oh, well.
