Tonight's beer: Avery Nineteen
Starts bright and fruity and bready-sweet: apples and pears and lemons and golden raising on top of honey-sweet white bread. Little hints of caramel and brighter baking spices back a bit. Grassy-floral bitterness emerges more on the middle, and from there through the finish the beer dries out a lot. Maybe a brief flicker of something like vodka in the distance.
Light-bodied, highly carbonated; smooth and slightly sticky. Finishes cleansing and drying and refreshing, with just a trace of boozy burn that's a bit less than I'd expect from a beer at 8.25% ABV.
Looking at the label for this beer, I have to wonder if Avery were aiming at Tripel Karmeliet; it's been a while since I've had that beer, but I'd say this is pretty close. A remarkable straightforward to-style beer for an anniversary release. Intense, complex, integrated, balanced. Entirely delicious and eminently drinkable.
