Tonight's beer: Black Diamond Fracas
Almost explosively bitter: Citrus in the form of tightly-braided grapefruit and orange; pine; grass and flowers and melons; strong impressions of pineapples and other assorted tropical fruits. Some caramel and bread turn all that flavor a shade toward the (bitter)sweet, with dark dried/candied fruits—raisins and dark cherries and maybe figs or something —lurking int he background. Dim possibilities of earth and dark chocolate. Finishes pleasantly very dry.
Medium-bodied, a little soft, brightly carbonated. Some resinous-syrupy stickiness on a long and slightly-chewy finish; gently refreshing and tending toward refreshing. Practically zero boozy heat, given the 8% ABV,
A delicious and massively drinkable Imperial Red, astonishingly intense and complex. Amazingly well balanced and integrated. Ranks up among the best I've had in the style. A beautiful introduction to a brewery I hadn't had before. Highly recommended.
