Tonight's beer: Blue Mountain Barrel House Long Winter's Nap
Lots of toast and caramel, backed by toffee and nuts; maybe a buttery trace in there, somewhere. Earthy-grassy bitterness, with grace notes of pine, proving more than adequate to balance things. Flickers of spice and dried/candied fruits. Maybe a trace of vanilla.
Kinda thick, and pretty smooth. Decently carbonated, and packing some substantial alcohol heat, making for a prickly experience. A lot of syrupy stickiness, eventually drying then strongly warming in the belly.
A very nice. *very big* doppelbock, with lots of flavor carried by almost over-the-top amounts of alcohol (as in, 10% ABV). Reminds me of Samichlaus, in that it's a doppelbock probably best approached as a barleywine. Drinkable for days, even with all that booze: remarkably balanced and nicely integrated, surprisingly complex and intense, distinctly graceful and more subtle than one might expect of such a sizy doppebock. I'll have to keep an eye out for more of this; Eventually.
