Tonight's beer: Brasserie Dupont Monk's Stout
I smell some roasty-dark stuff—chocolate and coffee—blended with the distinctly bright and fruity and spicy Dupont yeast character, with hints of caramel, peat, smoke in the distance.
On the palate, chocolate, smoke, and coffee open the show—ashy and bitter—with smoke and peat and earth in solid supporting roles. Traces of spices and bright fruits—apples and pears, mostly—lurking around the perimeter. Dry throughout.
Very light-bodied, explosively carbonated. Roasty-drying, but surprisingly refreshing. Clean, scrubbing, cleansing. Hints of a mineral bristliness, especially on the short sharp finish.
A pretty weird beer: Dupont's yeast character is much more apparent in the nose than on the palate. Delicious, but not like the stouts I'm used to, be they American or English or Irish or whatever. Tons of flavor for a pretty low-booze (5.25% ABV) beer, intense and very complex; nicely balanced and integrated. I'm happy I picked this up when I saw it. Weird, yes, but I enjoyed it plenty.
