Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Monster (2012)

Brooklyn Monster (2012)

Caramel and toasty sweetness, backed and balanced by ample grassy-earthy bitterness. Some vanilla and a smattering of dried/candied fruit around the perimeter.Spice and something like whiskey flickering in the distance. Pretty well-balanced between sweet and bitter throughout.

Thick and bready, chewy and a little sticky; amply carbonated. A trace of boozy alcohol burn, but nothing unpleasant. A bit drying. Eventually quite filling and warming and satisfying.

A very tasty Barleywine, seems more in the English tradition than the American one. Intense and complex, nicely balanced and integrated. More than substantial enough to take some age, I think—we'll have to obtain more with that in mind. More sippable than straight-up drinkable, but extraordinarily nice to take one's time with and to pay attention to.
